Satyamev Jayate' viewers support Aamir's expose

New Delhi, June 10 (IANS) Aamir Khan's effort to highlight malpractices in the medical profession in India through his path-breaking show "Satyamev Jayate" may have upset many doctors, but viewers agree that discreditable practices are widespread and the actor was indeed doing a great service and would "get support from all Indians."
"My husband is a diabetic and he refuses to visit the doctors for the simple reason that they might ask him to undergo mutliple tests and prescribe medicine which might not be suitable," Ajita Bajpai, a worried wife, wrote to IANS.
Her reaction followed Aamir's interview with IANS, wherein he refused to apologise to the Indian Medical Association (IMA) for exposing the underbelly of the country's medical system.
"In one experience - a wrong injection was prescribed. A second opinion confirmed our fears. The prescribed injection had side effects and was totally unsuitable to be taken. Needless to say it was expensive as well. Currently I am just worried as to how I can get him to visit a right doctor and have his faith restored with correct treatment," she added.
Bajpai isn't the only one.
"I've lived in India and travelled there over 13 times over several decades. I've spoken to dozens of doctors, visited hospitals, talked to patients and surviving members who lost loved ones under doctors' care. Your medical industry is frightening," wrote a reader under the name Dee.
"Surgeons stop in the middle of operations (Chandigarh) to take tea breaks. Doctors examine women without gloves. Surgery patients must rent their own equipment (IV bags, you name it) which is jointly owned by the doctors, and is then reused. Parents are pressed for more money while their child is on the operating table. Many doctors have no clue about hygiene, the proper treatment for diabetes, and give sugar pills for everything.
"Many doctors who got their degree 20, 30 or 40 years ago have never gone back and learned anything new. India has allowed doctors to run wild. What is truly surprising is that it took a talk show, and not an official investigation, to bring this out," added Dee.
After the fourth episode of the show, where Aamir put the spotlight on medical malfeasance, an umbrella body of 21 medical institutions has asked Aamir to apologise as they feel he has insulted the noble profession. Of course, the star is in no such mood.
"I have not insulted the medical profession at all. I have the highest regard for the medical profession. In fact what is insulting to the medical profession is those doctors who are indulging in unethical practices. They have insulted the medical profession, not me," Aamir told IANS in an interview.
Several fans and doctors agree.
"Aamir Khan is doing a great duty towards the country by all means. He is doing whatever myself and all Indians wish to do but can't. However, he will get threats from all the culprits who are doing wrong practices. But he will get support from all the Indians," wrote Anil Kumar, a viewer from Kochi.
Davare V.R., a general medical practitioner living in Ahmednagar for the past 50 years, says whatever Aamir projected through his show is true.
"There is no reason IMA or any other medical association should blame him. He is doing social work, indirectly exposing the bad elements in the medical profession. And it is equally true that 40 percent of the medical practioners are looting the population.
"Being in this profession, I've gathered a lot of experience during the last 50 years. The situation was not of this gravity when I started working in 1961. But it is worsening," wrote in Davare.
While a viewer named Touqear Khateeb feels Aamir is a "money maker", Mumbai-based doctor M. Balasubramanian suggests that Aamir should add a disclaimer to his show to avoid such allegations.
"Ours is a democracy; so anybody is free to say anything on any subject or discuss it on TV with nationwide exposure. While Aamir Khan's intentions are noble and in the interest of our country, he should put a disclaimer that the views reflected in the programme do not necessarily reflect the views of all the people," said Balasubramanian, CEO, Shushrusha Hospital, Mumbai.

Satyamev Jayate : Episode 4 Review and New iOS App

Low on tears but high on shocking value, Satyamev Jayate’s fourth episode dealt with horrendous medical practices forthrightly.

Aamir spoke to doctors and victims in the show to brings about instances of medical malpractices. The viewers were continuously talking about the probable subjects of the fourth episode. So far, the makers of ‘Satyamev Jayate’ have focused on the topics of female foeticide, child sexual abuse and the tradition of dowry; therefore it seems that the show is going to raise another major issue this time.

Aamir starts the show on an interactive note. The 47-year-old asks the young medicine professionals and students in the audience their real intent behind perusing medicines. “Be healers rather than just profit fetching experts,” urges Khan. Aamir read out the statistics of the percentage of doctors in England whose license were permanently cancelled in the past 3 years. But according to the RTI filed by Aamir and his team, not even a single doctor’s licence has been cancelled in the recent past – which goes to show that corrupt doctors are left scot free.

Major Pankaj Rai’s wife Seema was suffering from a kidney ailment. Without her family’s permission, doctors took her to the operation theatre for kidney and pancreas transplant. Rai had to pay Rs 8.25 lakh for the surgery and Seema lost her life too. Doctors didn’t even inform the family about her demise and the switched off their mobile phones.

Dr Anil Pichad from Mumbai who owns a pathology lab revealed that he used to overcharge patients for tests as he had to pay commission to the doctors. After he went through a personal tragedy, he realized his mistake. He has stopped bribing the doctors now and takes nominal charges from patients.

It was surprising to know that many women in Kowdipally village of Andhra Pradesh were asked to get their uterus removed. The operation is expensive and the farmers had to sell their land or take loans for it. In most of the cases, the surgery wasn’t needed.

Aamir also spoke to retired Major General Jhingon who was in charge of inspection at the MCI, and had resigned from his post as he was completely disillusioned by the way the body was functioning. He was shocked to see, “Everything was meant in terms of paisa, paisa, paisa.”

The show also spoke about Dr. Devi Shetty and his noble scheme that allows poor people to get medical treatment at affordable rates.

Satyamev Jayate iOS App Launched : The show now plans to make its mobile screen debut and an iOS app is just the step in that direction. The app will let users stream songs and watch videos. With each episode, the app will be updated with the new song and video showcased during that episode. Available on iTunes, the app has been priced at $1.99 (approx Rs.110) and has been developed by Hungama Digital Media Entertainment Pvt. Ltd.

SATYAMEV JAYATE episode 5: Aamir Khan discusses honour killing

SATYAMEV JAYATE episode 5: Aamir Khan discusses the horror of honour killing

Striking an emotional chord once again, Aamir Khan deals with the grave issue of honour killing bravely

We settle to watch the fifth episode of Aamir Khan’s Satyamev Jayate, ably equipped with tissue papers to wipe our teary eyes. It is a given now that Aamir leaves the viewers emotionally choked every week, though not many are keen to start their precious Sundays on a rather sombre note.
While we appreciate Mr Perfectionist’s ability to tackle various issues grappling our society, our collective minds and our nation at large. But Satyamev Jayate, has started getting monotonous and even boring. We fear if Aamir is slowly turning out to be the male Oprah Winfrey of India.
It is wise of the show-makers that the topic of discussion is kept a fiercely guarded secret, for if the audience gets to know the subject ahead of the times, anybody can to make out what to expect from the extremely predictable show.
The fifth episode of Satyamev Jayate deals with honour killing. Recently, there has been a spate of honour killings in the country where people are awarded death sentence for marrying against the parent’s wishes, having extramarital and premarital relationships, marrying within the same sect (gotra) or outside one’s caste. Aamir discusses this grave social practice bravely. Once again he doesn’t sit in judgment, but shows no hesitation in voicing his opinion.
On the lop side, we are tired of watching the show’s consistently boring treatment. We don’t necessarily doubt’s Aamir’s noble intentions and his ability to make us think together about the challenges we face collectively. But shedding copious amounts of tears every Sunday, which has become a regular feature on SMJ, is a bit much!
