Tainted by their birth into a caste system that deems them impure and less than human, Dalits or untouchables live a life that strips them of their dignity. Aamir Khan bravely discusses the social monster of casteism that runs deep in our psyche</h3><div style="margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">What if you are born with a label or an identity that deems you as impure, unacceptable and even guilty not just for a lifetime but it continues to discriminate you even after you death? Aamir Khan asks a pointed question based on the way people are being coldly categorised on the basis of their cast and creed in our country. <span id="more-122143" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"></span>Are all men truly born equal? Not really. Just take a look at headlines in our mainstream newspapers and you will know India’s untouchables are relegated to the lowest jobs, and live in constant fear of being publicly humiliated. In the tenth episode of <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Satyamev Jayate</em> Aamir casts light on untouchability.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">The show begins with a heart-wrenching story of Dr Kaushal Panwar who was born into a lower-caste family. Right from her schooling years to the present day where she is working as a university professor in Delhi, Panwar faced discrimination at every step in her life. With her story Aamir brings forth a shocking tale to introduce the monster of untouchabilty that exists even 2012 India.The discrimination is so deep-rooted that even elected MPs are not spared. MP P L Punia who is also the Chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes was barred from entering the Kali temple in Odisha because he is from a scheduled caste and his community has been traditionally not allowed to enter the temple.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">Documentary filmmaker Stalin reveals how untouchability is well-entrenched and is still being widely practiced across the country by people of all religions – right from children being discriminated at schools to people being ostracised at social functions. He shows us how dalit kids are forced to clean school toilets just because they belong to a particular creed. Stalin captures the biting reality in his camera and portrays it in his documentary film titled India Untouched. Aamir shows a few rushes of Stalin’s documentary to show the prevalent practice of discrimination, subjugation and casteism.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">Justice Chandrashekhar Dharmadhikari believes that the labels of cast and community are so deeply ingrained in people’s mind that they continue to remain even after a person’s death, and the only way to stop caste-based discrimination is to refuse the existence of a caste system.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">Aamir also discusses the provisions by law to stop manual scavenging. Statistically speaking, Aamir states that there are still around 13 lakh families across the country who continue to be employed in the most demeaning and humiliating profession ever known to man. Mostly people from lower caste (Dalits) are employed, or even forced to do manual scavenging, or cleaning other’s excreta.</div><div style="margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">Just like in previous episodes of <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Satyamev Jayate</em>, in this episode too, Aamir gets different points of view and different voices in. And in the end, Aamir asked viewers all over the country to send in their opinion on the subject.He also urges young Indians to come forward and participate in wiping out the social evil of casteism<br />

The reason for this is that the channel has blocked all the 2,000 slots for broadcaster’s promos over 27 hours (Monday 7 pm to Tuesday10 pm) for this new show. And the value of these slots is a whopping Rs 6.25 crore!<br />
The TV channel is going all out to create the required buzz and curiosity factor around Aamir’s first ever TV show as host-anchor and we hear that the actor is seeing the whole campaign through, with his usual perfectionist antenna on full alert. The actor is known to market his films with intelligent campaigns and great style, and he is leaving no stone unturned to see to it that his television debut also creates the right impact. It was Aamir’s idea that the footage from the making of the show itself be used to make the promos. He felt that this would help the team maintain the secrecy he demanded and also keep it real, which is the format of the show too.<br />
The marketing campaign has definitely made this one among the most awaited events to take off on TV. We’ll have to wait to see if the actual show lives up to the expectations that the teasers have raised. But as we already know, Aamir hardly ever puts a foot wrong!</div></div>Nitin Sirsathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16667217140670750096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1647464703450569102.post-29423555512399104322012-06-24T22:10:00.000-07:002012-06-24T22:10:07.823-07:00Amir Khan Satyamev Jayate Episode 8 (Sunday, 24 June 2012)<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, clean, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px;">For decades our food and water have been contaminated by powerful, harmful pesticides which have been promoted as necessary for better agricultural output. But the reality is that we don't need pesticides for better yield, and their use is not only deadly for health but results in expensive farming methods. <br />
When Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan graced the small screen with ‘Satyamev Jayate’, one would have least expected the impact the show would have on the aam janta and the bureaucrats.<br />

<br />
The show is a hit for all obvious reasons. However, what is grieving indeed is the fact that the nation needed Aamir Khan to awaken its sunken self. Was India running short of ideas to correct the infected system? Maybe yes.<br />
<br />
It looks as if Rajasthan Chief Minister Mr Ashok Gehlot needed Aamir Khan’s assistance in realizing the urgency to set up a fast track court to settle impending cases of female foeticide in the state.<br />
<br />
“I am moved by Aamir`s programme and his gesture. I will definitely take up the issue and speak to the chief justice of Rajasthan to find a way,” Gehlot said while addressing media at a press conference. But wasn’t Mr Gehlot aware of this crime that his state was committing for years? Couldn’t he have formulated a way to deal with the malice much earlier? Perhaps not.<br />
<br />
But while Mr Ghelot was kind enough to respond to Aamir’s appeal, Minister of State for Health, Rajkumar Sharma had a contrasting feedback to give on Aamir and his show.<br />
<br />
He said, “The government took up the issue much before Aamir Khan`s programme. It is not because of him that the government is working against female foeticide.” <br />
<br />
One can clearly see the lack of coordination in the state government; where one was acknowledging concerning issues, the other was trying to cover it up.<br />
<br />
Nonetheless, there were more resolutions that were being worked out. It may have been in the wake of ‘Satyamev Jayate’ or a mere coincidence , the Lok Sabha passed the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences Bill on 22nd May, precisely 10 days after the episode on child sex abuse was telecast.<br />
<br />
Moving ahead, what’s interesting is that Rajya Sabha MP Shanta Kumar of the Bharatiya Janata Party, who heads the parliamentary standing committee on commerce, had invited Aamir to share the knowledge they gained while researching the episode on malpractices in the medical fraternity.<br />
<br />
What was the committee doing prior to the telecast of the episode on medical malpractices? Why didn’t anyone discuss ways to uproot corruption from the healthcare system earlier?<br />
<br />
The Indian Medical Association made Aamir a villain for allegedly defaming its fraternity and the medical profession. But the IMA had little to say when Medico Friend Circle (MFC) and the Forum for Medical Ethics Society (FMES) slammed the body for trying to silence “messenger” Aamir.<br />
<br />
“We appreciate that you want to uphold the dignity of the medical profession. However, we feel that denying or minimizing the importance of issues raised on this show and demanding an apology from Aamir Khan is definitely not the most appropriate way of upholding the dignity of doctors,” said Dr Anant Phadke from MFC while talking to a daily.<br />
<br />
So it clearly emerges that there is a huge discrepancy in the system, which might take years to get rectified. <br />
<br />
However, one can see the changes being implemented with the Maharashtra Government announcing that generic medicines would be made available across all Government hospitals. In addition, the State Government has also planned to open medical stores across the state where generic medicines will be stocked in adequate amounts, and will be readily available for people.<br />
<br />
Thanking the state government, Aamir tweeted, “Great news guys! Maharashtra govt. announces Generic medicines to be made available! Thank u CM sir Mr Chavan & Health Min Mr Suresh Shetty(sic).”<br />
<br />
It feels good that the phenomenon called ‘Satyamev Jayate’ is directly or indirectly stirring souls but one question still remains unanswered - does India really need Aamir Khan to awaken social, moral, civic and national conscience?</div>Nitin Sirsathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16667217140670750096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1647464703450569102.post-57172241585311299312012-06-17T03:57:00.000-07:002012-06-17T03:57:51.620-07:00Satyamev Jayate’s Episode 7 Song with Lyrics : Sakhi<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><br />

<div id="LS-78"><h3>The actor-turned-chat show host discussed the issue with a studio audience composed entirely of men</h3>“Patriarchy has defined masculinity such that men can’t cry even when their mothers die,” says an activist on the seventh episode of Satyamev Jayate. Aamir Khan adds, “I cry a lot.” The studio audience, composed entirely of men – the only women present are the victims – laughs nervously. You laugh too but realise that there’s a huge truth hidden behind that one statement. You recall all the other episodes when<a href="http://www.bollywoodlife.com/pics/aamir-khan-sharman-joshi-boman-irani-rajkumar-hirani-at-the-premiere-of-ferrari-ki-sawaari/" target="_blank"> Aamir </a>would shed tears listening to a victim recall his or her plight. Suddenly it’s no more about just being a sympathetic host or a good actor. It’s become the basis of changing patriarchal thought, the same thought that leads to domestic violence against women.<br />

The best thing about this episode – which dealt with domestic violence – is the way <a href="http://www.bollywoodlife.com/news-gossip/aamir-khans-dhoom-3-finally-kicks-off/" target="_blank">Aamir</a> brought out the fact that men are not born aggressors and all men are not violent. Instead of taking the easy way out of demonising the men and deifying the women, Aamir took a more balanced approach. He brought forward the viewpoints of women who have stayed in abusive marriages for several years, men who happily admit to browbeating their women, a male police officer who is working hard to end this crime and admits that change has to begin from his own team, activists who work for empowering women, and the men in the studio audience who have their own take on masculinity. Patriarchal thought about masculinity and the role of women in society is what causes men to behave violently and women to take it quietly. <a href="http://www.bollywoodlife.com/news-gossip/aamir-khan-to-co-star-with-jackie-shroff-in-dhoom-3/" target="_blank">Aamir</a> insisted towards the end of the show that it’s that thought that needs to be changed, and the change has to begin with the men. It’s a huge statement to make and the fact that he had the guts to do it on national television will hopefully turn the tide in a few households at least.<br />

<div class="tag-cont-ra" style="height: 130px; margin-top: 8px; width: 670px;"><img align="left" alt="‘Satyamev Jayate’: Aamir Khan says treat the disabled as equals" class="bor-pad-ab" src="http://zns.india.com/upload/2012/6/10/aamir-khan-2.jpg" />Mumbai: The sixth episode of Aamir Khan’s ‘Satyamev Jayate’ dealt with the disabled section of the Indian society. The host, who has succeeded in striking an emotional chord with the masses, spoke about how people generally treat their disabled countrymen. </div><div id="myStory"><span id="advenueINTEXT" name="advenueINTEXT"><table align="right" width:210=""><tbody>
<tr><td><div id="relatedstory"> </div></td></tr>
</tbody></table>Citing a number of inspirational messages through videos of disabled people, the episode discussed the rights to education for all, irrespective of physical ability.<br />
<br />
However, the Indian society is seldom open to accepting people with physical or mental disability in the mainstream section. Most parents do not appreciate having disabled children in regular schools as they fear it might cast a negative impact on their children and hence institutions refrain from admitting disabled kids. And this indifferent attitude of people has been projected in the episode of the show.<br />
<br />
The show played host to blind and lame men who narrated their inspiring stories and proved that they too could fall within the bracket of the fittest and survive with pride.<br />
<br />
The audiences also stood witnesses to a noble initiate called ‘Amar Jyoti’, a school that welcomes all kinds of children and treats them as equals.<br />
<br />
And equal treatment would only begin when the government takes appropriate measures to treat them as one among the many from the mainstream section of the society.<br />
<br />
With over 6 crore people with disability in the Indian society, the need of the hour is to have disabled friendly infrastructure that will enable such people to have trouble free access to public places and vehicles.<br />
<br />
The show also urged companies to hire men and women with disability so that they too could contribute to the Indian economy.<br />
<br />
Captain Brar, a resident of Ahmedabad has set an example by setting up a company with over 270 disabled people employed. And according to him his company is doing exceptionally well because of their efforts and hard work.<br />
<br />
At the end, Aamir spoke about the need to have inclusive educational institutions with quality teaching staff and infrastructure in place that will allow disabled children too to be a part of regular schools and have a normal upbringing. </span></div></div>Nitin Sirsathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16667217140670750096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1647464703450569102.post-25836061763570156952012-06-10T01:52:00.002-07:002012-06-10T01:52:52.111-07:00Amir Khan Satyamev Jayate Episode 6 Sunday 10 June 2012<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><br />

They can, and want to, participate in all aspects of life along with the mainstream. But people with disabilities get shunned, doubted, mocked and insulted. Access to public places and buildings is restricted and often impossible. Doors are closed for schooling and employment. India does not appear to be mature enough and understanding enough to recognise people with disabilities for what they are – people.<br />

<div style="font-family: arial, verdana; font-size: 12px; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; padding: 5px;">New Delhi, June 10 (IANS) Aamir Khan's effort to highlight malpractices in the medical profession in India through his path-breaking show "Satyamev Jayate" may have upset many doctors, but viewers agree that discreditable practices are widespread and the actor was indeed doing a great service and would "get support from all Indians."</div><div style="font-family: arial, verdana; font-size: 12px; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; padding: 5px;">"My husband is a diabetic and he refuses to visit the doctors for the simple reason that they might ask him to undergo mutliple tests and prescribe medicine which might not be suitable," Ajita Bajpai, a worried wife, wrote to IANS.</div><div style="font-family: arial, verdana; font-size: 12px; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; padding: 5px;">Her reaction followed Aamir's interview with IANS, wherein he refused to apologise to the Indian Medical Association (IMA) for exposing the underbelly of the country's medical system.</div><div style="font-family: arial, verdana; font-size: 12px; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; padding: 5px;">"In one experience - a wrong injection was prescribed. <a href="" name="more"></a></div><div style="color: #444444; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; color: #444444; text-align: justify;"></div><div style="color: #444444; text-align: justify;">Aamir spoke to doctors and victims in the show to brings about instances of medical malpractices.The viewers were continuously talking about the probable subjects of the fourth episode. So far, the makers of ‘Satyamev Jayate’ have focused on the topics of female foeticide, child sexual abuse and the tradition of dowry; therefore it seems that the show is going to raise another major issue this time. </div><div style="color: #444444; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="color: #444444; text-align: justify;">Aamir starts the show on an interactive note. The 47-year-old asks the young medicine professionals and students in the audience their real intent behind perusing medicines. “Be healers rather than just profit fetching experts,” urges Khan.<span id="advenueINTEXT" name="advenueINTEXT"> Aamir read out the statistics of the percentage of doctors in England whose license were permanently cancelled in the past 3 years. But according to the RTI filed by Aamir and his team, not even a single doctor’s licence has been cancelled in the recent past – which goes to show that corrupt doctors are left scot free.</span></div><div style="color: #444444; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="color: #444444; text-align: justify;">Major Pankaj Rai’s wife Seema was suffering from a kidney ailment. Without her family’s permission, doctors took her to the operation theatre for kidney and pancreas transplant. Rai had to pay Rs 8.25 lakh for the surgery and Seema lost her life too. Doctors didn’t even inform the family about her demise and the switched off their mobile phones. </div><div class="hm-pic" style="color: #444444; padding-bottom: 2px; padding-left: 0pt; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 10px; position: relative; text-align: justify;"></div><div style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="color: #444444; text-align: justify;">Dr Anil Pichad from Mumbai who owns a pathology lab revealed that he used to overcharge patients for tests as he had to pay commission to the doctors. After he went through a personal tragedy, he realized his mistake. He has stopped bribing the doctors now and takes nominal charges from patients. </div><div style="color: #444444; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="color: #444444; text-align: justify;">It was surprising to know that many women in Kowdipally village of Andhra Pradesh were asked to get their uterus removed. The operation is expensive and the farmers had to sell their land or take loans for it. In most of the cases, the surgery wasn’t needed. </div><div style="color: #444444; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="color: #444444; text-align: justify;"><span id="advenueINTEXT" name="advenueINTEXT">Aamir also spoke to retired Major General Jhingon who was in charge of inspection at the MCI, and had resigned from his post as he was completely disillusioned by the way the body was functioning. It is a given now that Aamir leaves the viewers emotionally choked every week, though not many are keen to start their precious Sundays on a rather sombre note.<span id="more-110688" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"></span></div><div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">While we appreciate Mr Perfectionist’s ability to tackle various issues grappling our society, our collective minds and our nation at large. But <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Satyamev Jayate</em>, has started getting monotonous and even boring. We fear if Aamir is slowly turning out to be the male Oprah Winfrey of India.</div><div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">It is wise of the show-makers that the topic of discussion is kept a fiercely guarded secret, for if the audience gets to know the subject ahead of the times, anybody can to make out what to expect from the extremely predictable show.</div><div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">The fifth episode of<em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"> Satyamev Jayate</em> deals with honour killing. Recently, there has been a spate of honour killings in the country where people are awarded death sentence for marrying against the parent’s wishes, having extramarital and premarital relationships, marrying within the same sect (<em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">gotra</em>) or outside one’s caste. Aamir discusses this grave social practice bravely. Once again he doesn’t sit in judgment, but shows no hesitation in voicing his opinion.</div><div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">On the lop side, we are tired of watching the show’s consistently boring treatment. We don’t necessarily doubt’s Aamir’s noble intentions and his ability to make us think together about the challenges we face collectively. But shedding copious amounts of tears every Sunday, which has become a regular feature on SMJ, is a bit much!</div></div></div>Nitin Sirsathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16667217140670750096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1647464703450569102.post-40968341898682607212012-06-03T01:19:00.000-07:002012-06-03T01:19:11.913-07:00Tweets: 'Satyamev Jayate' episode 5 3rd June 2012<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><br />

Medicine, perceived as a noble profession, have been affected by a section of doctors who have brought corruption to their profession.<br />
<br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">Aamir spoke to doctors and victims in the show to brings about instances of medical malpractices.</div><div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">The viewers were continuously talking about the probable subjects of the fourth episode. So far, the makers of 'Satyamev Jayate' have focused on the topics of female foeticide, child sexual abuse and the tradition of dowry; therefore it seems that the show is going to raise another major issue this time.</div><div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;"><a href="http://www.blogger.com/post-edit.g?blogID=1647464703450569102&postID=6701446380410201267&from=pencil"><img alt="Satyamev Jayate: Stars Aamir Khan has created" class="aligncenter" data-mce-src="http://static.ibnlive.in.com/ibnlive/pix/sitepix/05_2012/newaamirsatya-1.jpg" src="http://static.ibnlive.in.com/ibnlive/pix/sitepix/05_2012/newaamirsatya-1.jpg" style="border: 0px; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" title="Satyamev Jayate: Stars Aamir Khan has created" width="545px" /></a></div><div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">I</div><div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">The popularity of Aamir Khan's show can be measured from the fact that the makers have now launched an official 'Satyamev Jayate' app for iOS devices such as iPhone, iPad and iPod. This will help the audiences in streaming songs and videos related to 'Satyamev Jayate'.<br />
<br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">The official site of 'Satyamev Jayate' also crashed due to the overwhelming response it got after the first show. The reaction to the show was better than the initial expectations. Some state governments such as Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh governments showed the willingness to fight against the ill traditions that are still in practice.<br />
<br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">The second episode was equally important as the first one. The data given by Aamir Khan were astonishing as well as alarming. It also made the social workers revisit some of the prominent cases of child sexual abuses happened in the past. This would have prompted them to prepare for the future battle against the demon of child sexual abuse.<br />
<br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">Normally, the Indian society doesn't give the problem of dowry much importance despite it being the root cause of several troubles including murders and domestic violence. The case studies were interesting enough to make the audience realise the darkness of the coveted world of domestic violence in the third episode.<br />
<br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">Some stories giving the glimpses about the third episode were found in media before the telecast of the third show, but this time the people behind the show seem determined to not reveal anything before 11 AM on May 27.<br />
<br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">As per some reports, a group of 30 guards is deputed to make the sets of 'Satyamev Jayate' leak proof.</div></div>Nitin Sirsathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16667217140670750096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1647464703450569102.post-9853197449403324712012-05-20T11:52:00.000-07:002012-05-20T11:52:38.017-07:00SATYAMEV JAYATE episode 3: Aamir Khan exposes horror of dowry death<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><br />

You may say this topic has been covered innumerable times but Aamir Khan does it in a surprisingly different, more refreshing way. <span id="more-106942" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"></span>The horrifying images of women burnt over dowry that we expected are not shown. Unlike the first two episodes, he keeps the shock value and tear jerking elements to the minimum and chooses to deal with the topic through a positive approach. He shows that the dowry system is prevalent across the nation (except north eastern states), social strata and religion. The evil of dowry is all-pervasive, yet it is not impossible to fight it. That’s the message he gives through the third episode of Satyamev Jayate.</div><div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;"><a href="http://www.bollywoodlife.com/news-gossip/satyamev-jayate-or-may-the-truth-win/" style="color: #ff0099; font-weight: bold; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank" title="‘Satyamev Jayate’? Or ‘May the truth win’?">Aamir </a>focuses on the ways to combat this evil and emphasises that the best way to do this is by empowering women. He doesn’t hold anyone guilty nor does he even mention the laws that have been formulated to end the crime. Dowry is a social evil and can be ended only when the men, women, their families and the members of each and every community come together and take a stand against it. Not once does he condemn the women and their families for giving dowry but he does urge other parents to not do it. It’s a fine line that he walks on and Aamir does it with sympathy and finesse. Kudos once again to the Khan.</div></div>Nitin Sirsathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16667217140670750096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1647464703450569102.post-11222396623516074082012-05-17T21:37:00.000-07:002012-05-17T21:37:56.377-07:00Aamir Khan’s Satyamev Jayate : self-righteous star to SOS?<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">

<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
Or is he really serious?</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
Like his film projects, his tv debut was also kept a secret till it finally came on air on Sunday at 11am. And it turned out to be exactly the same <a data-mce-href="http://moifightclub.wordpress.com/2012/04/20/every-thing-you-wanted-to-know-about-satyamev-jayate/#comment-8863" href="http://moifightclub.wordpress.com/2012/04/20/every-thing-you-wanted-to-know-about-satyamev-jayate/#comment-8863" target="_blank">as we had told</a> you earlier. It started with Aamir Khan’s voiceover (aha, the emotional modulation there, noticed?) talking about where we stand today. And then the chat show started where the topic was female foeticide. Case studies, tears, figures, tears, doctor, more case studies, more tears, more questions and finally a song by Swanand Kirkire and Ram Sampath overlapped with visuals of girl child, Aamir asking the kids to come sit close to him. Aha, if the last season of KBC was poverty porn, this is going one step ahead with just one mantra – we will, we will make you cry!</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
The set was tacky, production value made it looked like straight out of DD and graphics seemed out of CBSE school books. Who said serious issues need to look boring? Oh wait, our TA wouldn’t get it? That aside, i had two big issues with the show – First, the pitch and positioning of the show. Stand anywhere in Mumbai and you can see Aamir Khan staring into the void from one of the hoards.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
I am not sure why but i feel here’s our Aamir Jesus Christ. That look, that stare, the gaze, it’s all there in the stills, music videos, hoardings and the show. It’s so repulsive, so rehearsed and so bloody fake! The intention might be honest and i sincerely hope it helps in creating some awareness but one issue, one sunday, one episode – is it some kind of quick fix solution? Also, am cynical because he is the same actor who had suddenly felt about the Narmada Bachao Andolan during the promotion of Rang De Basanti and then vanished from the radar. Of course the release of RDB was just a coincidence. Blame it on my cynical mind!</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
My other issue is if he is really serious about endorsing social causes, why not let go your entire fees for it? Contribute to the cause and i will respect you for lifelong. There’s no harm in taking money and doing the show but i can’t digest the self-righteousness then. Doing 13 episodes for free isn’t a big deal, right? Go ahead, do it. Shut me up! Otherwise how different is it from NDTV Greenathon or IIFA Charity or such events which are organised by event management companies. Stars endorse the cause, gets paid, sponsors feel they have done their bit of corporate philanthropy and all happy. But is anyone really honest and serious? Aha, the cynical me.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
But then the other point is our tv shows are pure garbage. There’s almost nothing to watch. At least this show is trying something new, it’s going to stand out. And in that process if it can serve a purpose, that’s great. Agree.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<strong>So i asked on twitter if anyone would be willing to write about the show. Posting two views on the same. First one is by <a data-mce-href="https://twitter.com/#!/nomad_2001" href="https://twitter.com/#!/nomad_2001" target="_blank">Chintan Bhatt</a>. From my previous interaction with him on twitter, i know for sure that he is a big fan of Aamir Khan.</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<a data-mce-href="http://moifightclub.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/satyamev-jayate3.jpg" href="http://moifightclub.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/satyamev-jayate3.jpg"><img alt="" data-mce-src="http://moifightclub.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/satyamev-jayate3.jpg?w=614&h=409" height="409" src="http://moifightclub.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/satyamev-jayate3.jpg?w=614&h=409" style="border: 0px;" title="satyamev jayate3" width="614" /></a></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
I was not sure I was going to be able to watch Satyamev Jayate, though I had been waiting eagerly for it from weeks, because the night before which was full of drunken revelry, to celebrate the anniversary of another year of living, of yours truly, ended too late. But by some stroke of miracle, my eyes opened just to the tune of 11 am and with blurry eyes I switched on the TV. The show started and at least the format, the set, seemed nothing out of the ordinary. But as Aamir came on stage, giving a small speech, he did not sit on the sofa right away which was stationed on the middle of the stage. He slowly sat on the steps, just in front of the audience. I smiled and my hangover was gone.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
He was not a superstar, or an expert, or a know it all and did not pretend to be one. He was like me, and everyone else. Surrounded by the problems, and people facing it, like we all are, and trying to understand it. Though this format, sets, was something we had seen before, this honesty and intimacy was something Indian television had not witnessed before. When he spoke of the problems, his style was not of preaching but was of self discovery, more than anything else, which let the viewers feel part of the show.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
What was striking about the show for me was how all encompassing about the issue it was, or much more than anything I have seen before. Filled with facts and charts and statistics to supplement the emotional quotient and the true stories it presented, it attacked the issue right in its guts and where it hurts given the sense of denial, we as Indians have mastered to live in. The experts, the victims, their tears, the shock in the crowd, the silence that filled the room as they grasped the horror stories and the sense of disbelief on Aamir’s face, were all real and in a way reflected what so many of the viewers too felt.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
A few days back I was watching Aamir’s interview on CNBC and the interviewer on being told by Aamir that he has invested 2 years into the show and has given up on the endorsements, crores of rupees he could have earned, of how his selection of show timing was termed suicidal, how to telecast the show on DD so that reaches the most commonest denominator of the population sounded impossible and unheard of, etc, she almost out of frustration asked him, which effectively was, ‘But why do you need to push yourself so much and keep such tough targets for yourself?’ And again, he smiled and shrugged.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
My rage on seeing the views trying to demean him and the show on Twitter and elsewhere after watching the show, were gradually replaced by indifference of sorts. Fact which cannot be denied is that in a country obsessed with garbage in the name of entertainment and where smartness is equated with how manipulative and selfishly you can lead your life, he made the whole country talk about one of the most inhumane and disgustingly hidden practice which has become a commonality behind closed doors.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
The anger towards the pointless and forced cynicism was further nullified by the thought I had of those thousands of families who would have done these heinous activities, which will be taken up in all the episodes of the show, who will now be forced to sit and think hopefully. Of all those silent voices, all those abused and assaulted, all those bullied and tortured who will now again have hope of fighting for their right to survive and live. Yes, its sounds good to say that we don’t need an Aamir Khan to tell us what is good and bad, we are too educated and intellectual for that, but as the biggest revelation of today’s episode was that education has nothing to do with goodness, intellect has nothing to do with being humane. We are living in an imperfect, corrupt and insensitive world, and we need heroes desperately, we need to face harsh true stories desperately, we need to know what being humane feels again desperately, and in this same imperfect world, this show does that. It forces the monsters in laws of the country to look in the eyes of their daughters in law, of their near and dear ones and face the truth. It makes the demonic husbands to feel ashamed and disgusted at themselves, if not from the inside, then the world in their immediate surroundings should have a collective voice to ridicule them, and this show will do that. We are living in a star obsessed country which silently breaths and breeds away from the confines of the cynicism of twitter and their likes, and that’s the nerve this show will catch, hopefully.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
No, no one is claiming that this show will solve all the problems of the country. No one is that naive, but it’s worth an attempt, if it gets people to start talking. That’s all. And if that’s the minimum it can do, then be it. As the gentleman sardar who featured in today’s show with teary eyes said, – EVEN IF I CAN SAVE 1 GIRL, ITS ENOUGH. Some battles are worth fighting for, to win or lose is immaterial.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
At the end, my bout of anger was gone completely when after about half hour after the show was over, the maid in my house came with a black eye and after few days of not coming to work. On coaxing by my flat mate she revealed that our husband is a drunkard and beats her in front of their two kids incessantly. From the fear of not telling anybody, she does not even scream, she takes it all on silently. And she is too scared to go to the police. Who will tell her and millions of other such stories? Will the cynics look in her eyes and crack a joke on the color of her wound? Well, you never know, they may. But this show talks about these victims, and will give countless number of them the tiniest bit of hope to fight back. By the end of the show Aamir said the biggest contribution was to be done by the youth of this country. And my rage towards the cynics was shifted to anger towards bastards like the maid’s husband, and attempts will be on to do something about it, like they have been from long. As they say there are those who say and crib, and there are those who do. Its very simple.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
I remember debates with my father, who used to enjoy the so called escapist cinema which I despise. After a long heated debate, I simply used to ask him, ‘Why do we need to travel to a world unknown to find beauty and strength? Can’t we explore the same around us in our films?’ That is the biggest gift the show has given me. It has given me heroes who exist around me and us, whose beauty lies in their bravery, like all those women who were in the show today. They are the real heroes with real stories. Agreed, there may have been other shows who would do that, but for the first time I felt their bravery and strength, and that is why I thank Aamir and the channel for the show through this small insignificant post. All is not lost, yet.</div>

<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<strong>And here’s the other view. This one is by someone who calls himself <a data-mce-href="https://twitter.com/#!/ThePuccaCritic" href="https://twitter.com/#!/ThePuccaCritic" target="_blank">The Pucca Critic</a>.</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
After almost a month of promotion as <em>“Har Baat dil pe lagegi toh hi baat banegi”</em> by Aamir Khan, Satyameva Jayate’s first episode was aired on Star Plus, DD National & also Star Pravaah (with Marathi subtitles) today at 11 a.m. Let us see <em>kitni baat dil pe lagi!</em></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<em><br /></em></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
The show started with some scenic shots and Aamir Khan blabbering about himself as an actor and a human being. And that’s what he tried to do throughout the show: I’m The Aamir Khan. I’m India’s inspiring role model. The idol of the common man. I’m here to change your life with this TV show for which I’m charging hefty sum.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
No sooner did the show started, we learn that it’s kind of talk show dealing with sensitive social issues. Aamir Khan pretending to be appealing enough for the <em>aam – junta</em> does gigs like sitting at the stairs of the dais while delivering his speech to expect Oh-look, this-superstar-doesn’t-mind-sitting-on-the-floor reaction.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
Moving over, we are introduced with 3 ladies who narrated their ghastly tales about how they were tortured after delivering a baby girl. So that’s what the topic of the day was: female foeticide & how it is related with other criminal happenings like ignorance of women in society, sexual harassment and flesh trading. Their emotions were raw. Enough to give you a gulp in the throat.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
While discussing a case, crude pictures of the lady being victimized of physical assault by his husband were displayed without a blur (which is how news channels are made to show). A leading daily once made a gore picture of a bomb blast victim to the headline to which their readers irked by remarking them as selling information porn. OK. So this is how Aamir Khan wants his words to touch the hearts?</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
All through the interview, you can hear Aamir interrogating silly questions. <em>“Aur kaisa feel hua aapko tab?” “Aur kya hua tha?”</em> Genuine thoughtful questions were lacked.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
And more irritating were the reactions by the audience. “Haawww” “Ohh noo..” “Ohhff” That’s how general interactions with the common audience were lacked instead they were focused for their shocks and tears as if they were expecting the public watching on TV to cry too. The flawed direction is made deliberate when a lawyer (part of the related case) interrupts midway of another interview and the interview is carried no further but diverged by the host. I don’t know how many retakes were needed to shoot this!</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
They also ended up with some marketing of 3G technology of a telecom network by a video conference with some bachelors of Haryana who discussed bachelorhood of Salman Khan. Don’t tell me this wasn’t rigged!</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
This is how the show meant-to-be inspiring ended with the uninspiring host who asks his audience to send SMS to a number if they support the cause. <strong>Do you really think sending SMSes will help?</strong></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
Finally, Aamir calls up his friend and musician Ram Sampth along with Swanand Kirkire to perform a beautiful, lyrical song <em>“O Re Chiriya.”</em></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<em><br /></em></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
What we expect is some improvement in the direction of the show with retaining the raw emotions of the subject and uplifting the enthusiasm of the audience as the show ends.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<strong>P.S: </strong>If you really want to see inspiring Aamir Khan, watch Sarfarosh or Lagaan. And if you hate Aamir’s face, watch Anoop Soni on Crime Patrol. He’s terrific.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
———————-</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
And here’s a video review to end the post on a lighter note…</div>
