Satyamev Jayate : Episode 4 Review and New iOS App

Low on tears but high on shocking value, Satyamev Jayate’s fourth episode dealt with horrendous medical practices forthrightly.

Aamir spoke to doctors and victims in the show to brings about instances of medical malpractices. The viewers were continuously talking about the probable subjects of the fourth episode. So far, the makers of ‘Satyamev Jayate’ have focused on the topics of female foeticide, child sexual abuse and the tradition of dowry; therefore it seems that the show is going to raise another major issue this time.

Aamir starts the show on an interactive note. The 47-year-old asks the young medicine professionals and students in the audience their real intent behind perusing medicines. “Be healers rather than just profit fetching experts,” urges Khan. Aamir read out the statistics of the percentage of doctors in England whose license were permanently cancelled in the past 3 years. But according to the RTI filed by Aamir and his team, not even a single doctor’s licence has been cancelled in the recent past – which goes to show that corrupt doctors are left scot free.

Major Pankaj Rai’s wife Seema was suffering from a kidney ailment. Without her family’s permission, doctors took her to the operation theatre for kidney and pancreas transplant. Rai had to pay Rs 8.25 lakh for the surgery and Seema lost her life too. Doctors didn’t even inform the family about her demise and the switched off their mobile phones.

Dr Anil Pichad from Mumbai who owns a pathology lab revealed that he used to overcharge patients for tests as he had to pay commission to the doctors. After he went through a personal tragedy, he realized his mistake. He has stopped bribing the doctors now and takes nominal charges from patients.

It was surprising to know that many women in Kowdipally village of Andhra Pradesh were asked to get their uterus removed. The operation is expensive and the farmers had to sell their land or take loans for it. In most of the cases, the surgery wasn’t needed.

Aamir also spoke to retired Major General Jhingon who was in charge of inspection at the MCI, and had resigned from his post as he was completely disillusioned by the way the body was functioning. He was shocked to see, “Everything was meant in terms of paisa, paisa, paisa.”

The show also spoke about Dr. Devi Shetty and his noble scheme that allows poor people to get medical treatment at affordable rates.
